S.E.D.I.M.E.N.T.S.

Studio

S.E.D.I.M.E.N.T.S is as much a studio as an experimental process, best described as the interplay between research and practice, art and architecture, laboratory and field. Working through both conceptual and material-driven approaches, S.E.D.I.M.E.N.T.S realizes artworks, films, and site-responsive public interventions that explore questions of environment and landscape through multiple lenses including cultural history, ecology, politics, materiality and deep time.

White Pine Travels 2025 →

White Pine Travels: At the Broom Factory is the first instalment of a mobile architectural pavilion designed by Noah Scheinman. The structure will eventually travel to Ottawa and through the Ottawa Valley to Algonquin Provincial Park, where the timber used in its construction was originally harvested in the late 19th century. In Kingston, the pavilion sits at the north end of the Broom Factory parking lot, framing views of the urban woods to the north. Equal parts large-scale sculpture, community gathering space, and travelling outdoor cinema, it reworks vernacular architectures into a platform for collective reflection and creative experimentation. Made primarily from old-growth white pine reclaimed from the depths of the Ottawa River, the project engages the rich histories and layered narratives embedded in its material.

Shells II Shells 2025 →

Shells II Shells reimagines the future geological strata of the Great Lakes in terms of the shells of zebra and quagga mussels. Introduced through ballast water in the 1980s, these invasive bivalves now carpet the lake beds in layers dense enough to constitute a new geological formation — a marker of the Anthropocene written in calcium carbonate. The project moves between lakeshore fieldwork, natural history archives, and material speculation, tracing the slow accumulation of shells as both ecological disruption and geological event. It asks what it means when an invasive species becomes the sediment of the future, and what kind of deep time that future implies for the landscapes and bodies of water we presently inhabit.

Many Atmospheres Deeper 2025 →

Flickering somewhere between figure and ground, Many Atmospheres Deeper probes the limits of visibility through global infrastructures of finance and resource extraction. The emerging frontiers of critical minerals are landscapes generated through remote sensing and market forecasts, artificial intelligence and digital twin simulations. That is, they demand supply chains not only of mines, ports and human workers, but also logistical networks of images, instruments and corporate lobbyists. Returning to the concept of the "abyss" to consider the vast unknowns that make a world known, Scheinman suggests a new paradigm of exalted encounter with three spatial imaginaries — the desert, the ocean and the swamp — that in this critical moment of energy transition are increasingly, or perhaps once again, coming into view.

Content and images for this project are forthcoming. The work is part of an ongoing body of practice exploring questions of environment, landscape, and material culture. Drawing on research across multiple sites and disciplines, the project engages with the layered histories and futures of specific places, infrastructures, and ecologies. Further documentation — including images, descriptions, exhibition histories, and related texts — will be added as the project develops. The work is part of an ongoing body of practice exploring questions of environment, landscape, and material culture.

Heavy Water Machine 2023 →
Heavy Water Machine is an interdisciplinary installation examining the entanglement of bodies, water, and nuclear infrastructure along the shores of Lake Ontario. Through sculpture, video, and garment, the work traces the invisible flows of heavy water that circulate through CANDU reactors—a substance both sustaining and hazardous, ordinary and charged. The project asks what it means to inhabit a landscape whose risks are structural, whose beauty is indifferent.
